This immense sculpture depicts the head of a bearded man and is modeled after a piece found in the Pio-Clementino Museum within the Vatican Museums. Noteworthy are the two circular shapes within the god’s beard, which some interpret as symbolic of testicles associated with the god Uranus, the deity of the sky and heavens. Uranus is also known as the progenitor of the Titans, whose genitals were famously severed and cast into the sea, leading to the birth of Aphrodite from the foam that emerged.
