The west pediment of the Parthenon, a marble sculpture group, illustrates the legendary contest between Athena and Poseidon for dominion over Attica. Created by Pheidias and his workshop between 438 and 432 BCE, this pediment measures 27.5 meters by 3.3 meters. Currently housed in the British Museum in London and the Acropolis Museum in Athens, it showcases Athena holding an olive tree while Poseidon raises his trident at the center.
Key features of the pediment include naturalistic movement, with figures exuding vitality and dynamism. The sculptures wear thin chitons, allowing the contours of the body to be discerned underneath. Flanking the central conflict are depictions of ancient kings of Athens, including Kekrops. Additionally, two fragments from a woman’s statue, believed to represent Iris, the winged messenger of the gods, are situated near Amphitrite’s chariot.
