The Sphynx of Naxos

This is a replica of the famous Sphynx of Naxos, which stood next to the temple of Apollo in Delphi, Greece. It was originally placed to the right of the temple outside, and was a gift or offering from Naxos, which was one of the richest Cycladic islands at the time of its dedication. This colossal statue sitting atop its Ionic column was used to ward off evil, and was the oldest element in the Ionic order in Delphi, and was situated near the rock of the Sibylla and in the foreground of the polygonal retaining wall of the temple. This beautiful piece is 42 centimeters tall ( the column), and the sphynx is 10 centimeters tall, for a total of 52 centimeters in height. The item comes in two pieces, so make sure to let us know if you would like us to glue the sphynx on the pillar, otherwise they will come together but separate.
