The Sphinx of Naxos – 3D MODEL

The Sphinx of Naxos, a marble statue standing at a height of 2.22 meters, portrays the mythical being known as a sphinx. This enigmatic creature is depicted with the head of a woman, the body of a lioness, and the wings and chest of a bird of prey. Currently housed in the Delphi Archaeological Museum, the statue serves as a captivating artifact showcasing the rich mythology and artistry of ancient civilizations. The sphinx was a gift from the people of Naxos around 560 BCE and once stood on a 12.10-meter-high Ionic column next to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. Positioned near the Halos within the sanctuary, the statue served as a guardian, believed to commemorate Apollo’s triumph over the serpent Python. Reflecting both earthly divinity and celestial power, the sphinx stands as an exemplary piece of Naxian sculpture from the 6th century BCE. Comprised of several significant fragments, including the head, upper and lower torso, along with smaller pieces, the sphinx bears visible signs of weathering. While some portions, like the legs and capital, have undergone restoration, the statue retains its ancient allure despite the passage of time. In Greek culture, the sphinx embodies mercilessness, challenging those who dare to confront her with riddles. Failure to solve her enigmas results in fatal consequences, as she devours her victims. Originating from the Egyptian sphinx, the Greek rendition imbues the creature with distinct features—a woman’s visage and bosom, a lion’s physique, and wings akin to a bird.
