This extraordinary reproduction in PLA of the stone relief sculpture, dated to approximately 200-300 CE, depicts Mithras emerging naked from a cosmic egg, surrounded by an egg-shaped zodiacal design that symbolizes the universe. It was discovered in the Mithraeum of Vercovicium (now known as Housesteads Roman Fort), near Hexham in Northumberland, and is currently preserved at the Great North Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne. This is the only known depiction in Britain of the birth of Mithras from the cosmic egg. The symbolic power of the sculpture remains evident: the scene fuses the figures of the Orphic creator God Phanes and the God Aion with Mithras, offering a unique syncretic interpretation. This exceptional piece also represents the earliest known depiction of the zodiac in Britain and remains one of the most significant Mithraic works recovered from the area surrounding Hadrian’s Wall, on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. This piece is truly essential for any Roman altar or Lararium, and especially fitting for commemorating the birth of Mithras, “the true God born on December 25,” not the Galilean.
