This portrait may be a reproduction of an original posthumous sculpture created by Lysippos around 318-317 BCE, portraying the philosopher seated. Historical records suggest that the original bronze sculpture, which is now lost, was commissioned by Athens as an expression of remorse for condemning Socrates to death.
