This sculpture portrays Psyche, the deity representing the soul and the spouse of Eros, the god of love. Originally a mortal princess renowned for her exceptional beauty, Psyche drew the jealousy of Aphrodite when men began to direct their admiration towards her instead of the goddess.
In retaliation, Aphrodite instructed Eros to cause Psyche to fall in love with the ugliest of men. However, instead of following the command, Eros himself fell in love with Psyche and whisked her away to his concealed palace. Concealing his true identity, Eros warned Psyche never to gaze upon his face.
Yet, Psyche’s envious sisters deceived her into disobeying this command, leading to Eros abandoning her in anger. Psyche embarked on a quest to find her lost love and eventually found herself in the service of Aphrodite, who imposed upon her a series of seemingly insurmountable tasks, culminating in a journey to the Underworld. After completing her trials, Psyche was reunited with Eros, and the two were joined in matrimony in a ceremony attended by all the gods.
