Perseus is celebrated for his feats, including the slaying of Medusa, a monstrous being whose gaze turned onlookers into stone, and the rescue of Andromeda from a sea creature. He is also credited as the progenitor of the Perseid dynasty and regarded as one of the foremost heroes of Greek lore, preceding even Heracles. In the story, Perseus’s grandfather, King Acrisius of Argos, receives a prophecy foretelling his demise at the hands of his grandson.
To avert this fate, he confines Perseus’s mother, Danaë, in a dungeon. However, Zeus, disguised as a shower of gold, impregnates her. Upon Perseus’s birth, Acrisius seals mother and child in a chest, casting it into the sea. The chest drifts to Seriphos, where a fisherman rescues them. King Polydectes manipulates Perseus into pledging to retrieve Medusa’s head. Assisted by divine aid, Perseus uses Athena’s shield to view Medusa’s reflection, preventing her gaze from petrifying him as he decapitates her with an adamantine sword called a harpe
