Menippus of Gadara, hailing from what is now Umm Qays, Jordan, was a Greek philosopher, satirist, and former slave who flourished during the 3rd century BCE. Embracing the tenets of Diogenes’ cynic philosophy, he is acclaimed for originating Menippean satire, a genre blending seriousness with comedy that left a mark on Latin satire. Despite his significant influence in antiquity, none of his writings have survived, rendering him a prominent yet lesser-known figure from that era.
