Menelaus ruled over Mycenaean Sparta before the Dorian invasion. He is famously known as the husband of Helen of Troy and played a significant role in the events of the Trojan War. Born to Atreus and Aerope, he was the brother of Agamemnon, the powerful king of Mycenae. According to the Iliad, Menelaus led the Spartan forces in the Trojan War.
He is a prominent figure in both the Iliad and the Odyssey. Menelaus’s exploits are also depicted in Greek vase art and tragic plays, where he is often portrayed more as a heroic figure of the Trojan War rather than as a member of the troubled House of Atreus.
