Marcus Aurelius was a Stoic philosopher and a Roman emperor from 161-180. He was the last ruler of the Pax Romana, an era of relative peace as well as the last of the “Five Good Emperors” of Rome. His most famous work was his Meditations, which has influenced countless thinkers throughout the ages, and is still read by many people either walking the philosophical path, or simply wanting some words of comfort and wisdom to ponder.
The statue survived the Christian destruction of statues because they believed this to be a representation of Constantine the Great. This astounding and elegant piece of ancient Roman rule and power is a replica of the original Roman bronze equestrian sculpture that is now on display in the Capitoline Museums in Rome, Italy, and depicts the Stoic philosopher-emperor on the back of his noble steed with his arm stretched out to the world. A truly stunning work of art for any student of history or philosophy.
