The Lycean Apollo, attributed to Praxiteles, is depicted in various full-size statues, figurines, and 1st Century BCE Athenian coinage. This statue type portrays Apollo resting on a support, such as a tree trunk or tripod, with his right forearm touching the top of his head.
His hair is styled in braids, reminiscent of a childhood haircut. The name “Lycean” originates from its association with a lost sculpture described by Lucian, which was displayed in the Lyceum, one of Athens’ gymnasiums. According to Lucian, the depiction of the god leaning on a support with his bow in his left hand and his right hand resting on his head suggests he is “as if resting after long effort.
