Ionic columns, originating in Ionia during the 6th century BC, represent a distinct style of column architecture. Notable for their volutes—spiral whorl designs resembling spiral shells—extending from the sides of the column capital, they exhibit greater ornamentation compared to Doric columns. Typically standing eight to nine column-diameters tall, Ionic columns boast a slimmer profile, necessitating the presence of a base.
Crafted from multi-layered stone slabs, this base provides support for the column, upon which the shaft rests. The shaft is often fluted with 24 hollow channels, with rounded terminations rather than abrupt ends. Atop the shaft sits an Ionic or Attic base, comprised of two convex tori separated by a concave scotia.
