This bust is a replica from the 3rd Century CE, inspired by a Greek original dating back to the 4th Century BC. Herodotus (484 – 425 BCE) was an ancient Greek historian born in Halicarnassus, within the Persian Empire, situated in modern-day Bodrum, Anatolia (Turkey). He gained renown for his seminal work, “The Histories,” which meticulously chronicled his investigations into the origins of the Greco-Persian Wars. Herodotus is acclaimed as the pioneer of historical methodology, employing a systematic approach to gather and critically analyze his sources, thus earning him the moniker “the Father of History,” bestowed upon him by the Roman divine orator Cicero in the 1st century BCE.
