This piece is a partial reproduction known as the Hermes and Infant Dionysos, also referred to as the Hermes of Olympia or Hermes of Praxiteles. Scholarship presents differing opinions regarding its origin: whether it’s an original Greek creation by the renowned sculptor Praxiteles, a Roman replica of his work, or the creation of a lesser-known artist with the same name.
If it indeed originates from ancient Greece, its survival is remarkable. The sculpture’s right arm is missing, but it’s presumed that Hermes once held a cluster of grapes, playfully tempting the infant Dionysos, the god associated with wine and revelry. Notably, only one ancient writer, Pausanias, deemed Hermes of Praxiteles noteworthy enough for mention.
