Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire, volcanoes, metalworking, crafts, and blacksmithing, is renowned as the blacksmith of the Olympian gods, forging dwellings, armor, and gadgets for their utility. Notable among his creations are Pandora, the first woman, Hermes’ helm, and hidden mechanisms for Hera’s chambers.

Perched on Mount Olympus, Hephaestus is depicted here in a brief pause from his labor, his tunic slightly open as he temporarily lays down his tools. Scattered at his feet are weapons intended for deities and heroes, with Mars, the god of war, being one of his prominent clients, albeit also serving as a romantic rival.
