The Dionysus head is among numerous ancient replicas, with the “Head from the South Slope” of the Athenian Acropolis regarded as particularly remarkable. Despite efforts, the specific statuary type it represents remains unidentified. It is speculated that the inspiration for this model could have been a renowned Early Hellenistic statue housed in the Athenian sanctuary of Dionysus. Crafted from marble, this Roman replica is based on an original piece dating back to 270 – 250 BCE.
