Epicurus head – 3D MODEL

Epicurus (341 BCE–270 BCE) stands as a significant figure in ancient Greek philosophy, credited as the founder of Epicureanism, a school of thought that continues to hold sway today. He espoused materialism and atomism, positing that the universe consists of indivisible particles of matter moving through space, with no discernible beginning or end. Central to his philosophy was the principle that “pleasure is the guiding force and ultimate goal of a contented existence.” Epicurus’s teachings fostered skepticism toward religion, urging a critical stance against superstition and divine intervention. Born in Samos, a Greek settlement, Epicurus received his education under the tutelage of Plato and Democritus. Though a prolific writer, only fragments of his works and four surviving letters endure. The head displayed here was originally part of a Greek statue dating back to the first half of the 3rd century B.C.E. One of the sculptors associated with Hephaisteon meticulously restored the nose and other imperfections.
