This bust depicts Hadrian during the early years of his reign, characterized by his relatively short beard and a serene, somewhat contemplative expression. In Roman society, individuals typically shaved off their beards upon reaching maturity in their mid-twenties.
However, Hadrian departed from this convention, opting to retain his beard. This decision initiated a trend that endured in imperial portraiture until the era of Constantine in the early fourth century. Hadrian’s choice to maintain his beard was influenced by his admiration for Greek culture, where beards symbolized wisdom and maturity.
One of the sculptors at Hephaisteion has skillfully polished the emperor’s facial and neck marks and restored the missing portion of his shoulder.
