Doryphoros, which translates from Greek as “spear-bearer,” is a renowned Greek sculpture created by the sculptor Polyclitus in the 5th century BCE. This masterpiece is considered one of the most prominent examples of classical Greek sculpture. It depicts an athlete or warrior in a contrapposto pose, with a muscular and balanced body.
Doryphoros is celebrated for its idealized beauty and precise mathematical proportions, reflecting the aesthetic and philosophical ideals of its time. Recently, artisans at the Hephaisteion workshop have conducted a restoration of the piece, repairing the cracks on the arms and legs, and reattaching the spear, thereby restoring its original splendor to this masterpiece of Hellenistic sculpture.
