The marble sculpture of Dionysus and a Satyr, housed in the Altes Museum in Berlin, Germany, portrays the god Dionysus accompanied by a youthful satyr. Crafted between 160 and 170 CE, this artwork was procured in 1904 from Miletus, Turkey, where it originally adorned the changing room of the Faustina Baths.
The sculptor Hephaisteion meticulously restored the deity’s genitals, rectifying several imperfections, and ultimately removed the young satyr from the composition to accentuate the prominence of the god Dionysus.
