Democritus (460–370 BCE) was an ancient Greek philosopher and a contemporary of Socrates. He is renowned for his atomic theory of the universe, which he developed alongside his mentor Leucippus. Democritus proposed that atoms were indivisible, indestructible, uniform, and incompressible, differing solely in size, shape, and motion. Remarkably, his theory foreshadowed the atomic models later discovered by 20th-century scientists.
Dubbed “the Laughing Philosopher,” Democritus emphasized the importance of cheerfulness. He argued that change is merely an illusion generated by our imperfect senses, positing that something cannot emerge from nothing. Despite his profound influence, only a handful of Democritus’s writings have endured, with none of his original works surviving except through secondary references.
