Chrysippus of Soli (279 – 206 BCE) stands as a prominent figure in Greek Stoic philosophy. Hailing from Soli, Cilicia, he migrated to Athens in his youth, where he studied under Cleanthes at the Stoic school. Following Cleanthes’s passing around 230 BCE, Chrysippus assumed leadership as the third head of the school.
Renowned for his prolific writings, Chrysippus significantly elaborated upon the foundational tenets established by Zeno of Citium, the school’s founder, earning him the epithet of Second Founder of Stoicism.
This particular style of bust commonly represents the philosopher, with another replica housed at The British Museum, London. These busts are Augustan replicas (23 BCE – CE 14) of an original from the late 3rd Century BCE, which unfortunately no longer survives.
