Cautes and Cautopates are torch-bearers attending the God Mithras, who represent the stations of sunrise( Cautes with raised torch) and sunset( Cautopates with lowered torch). They also represent the spring and autumn equinoxes, day and night, life and death, etc. These striking statues are reconstructed replicas of the limestone statues on display in the Great North Museum in Newcastle, of which there is a photo of them above.
