Castor, known as the mortal half of the Dioscuri, divine twins born from the union between Queen Leda and different fathers, is the mortal son of Tyndareus, the king of Sparta. This brave character is renowned for his skill in warfare and unwavering loyalty to his twin brother, Pollux.
Castor and Pollux, known for their brotherhood and battlefield prowess, were often invoked for protection, especially during sea voyages and in times of war. Castor’s story includes his tragic death in a skirmish, after which his brother Pollux implored Zeus to share his immortality, resulting in their placement in the sky as the constellation Gemini.
Castor was worshipped as a protective deity and benefactor, particularly among sailors and those in perilous situations. In Rome, Castor and Pollux were known as the Dioscuri and were venerated, even having a temple in the Roman Forum.
The majestic statues of the Dioscuri we present are exact replicas of those found on the Quirinal, one of Rome’s most iconic hills. In this iteration, Castor’s majestic horse is also included, a truly magnificent pair indeed.
