Castor, the mortal, and Pollux, the immortal, known as the Dioscuri, are divine twins born from the union of Queen Leda and two different fathers: Cástor, son of Tyndareus, king of Sparta, and Pollux, son of Zeus, the supreme God. These courageous twins are central figures in Greek and Roman mythology, renowned for their loyalty, bravery, and involvement in heroic feats. Castor and Pollux were celebrated for their brotherhood and unwavering loyalty to each other. Skilled in warfare, they were often invoked for protection during sea voyages and battles. After Castor’s death in a skirmish, Pollux implored Zeus to share his immortality with his brother. Consequently, they were placed in the sky as the constellation Gemini. Adored as protective deities and benefactors, especially by sailors and those in perilous situations, the Dioscuri were revered in Rome, where they were known as such and had a temple in the Roman Forum. The majestic statues of the Dioscuri we present are exact replicas of those found on the Quirinal, one of Rome’s most iconic hills.
