This representation of Dionysus, in the Sardanapalus style and affixed to a contemporary herm, traces its roots to a Greek prototype from the late 4th century BC. Crafted during the mid-2nd century AD, this is a Roman reproduction. The original, portraying the full figure, is recognized as The Dionysus Sardanapalus. It is a unique Hellenistic-Roman Neo Attic sculpture type, depicting the god Dionysus, erroneously named after Sardanapalus, the final ruler of Assyria.
