This sculpture portrays Asclepius, the deity associated with medicine and well-being. Originally titled ‘Bust of a Bearded Man,’ it is a partial reproduction of a 2nd-century AD marble rendition of a Greek sculpture created by Timotheos in the early 4th century BC. The authentic piece, once part of the Albani collection, was confiscated by the French in 1718 and later acquired by the Louvre in 1815, where it has been housed ever since.
