This remarkable marble bust portrays Ares, also known as Mars in Roman culture, the Greek deity associated with war. As one of the Twelve Olympians and the offspring of Zeus and Hera, he embodies the essence of battle. Bearing a striking resemblance in facial structure and features, this sculpture is recognized as a reinterpretation of the Ares Borghese, an ancient Greek original crafted by Alkamenes around 420 BCE.
While the original ornate helmet is no longer present, this sculpture provides insight into the likely appearance of Ares Borghese.
