This monumental marble sculpture, crafted by an anonymous artist in the 2nd century CE, was discovered in Tivoli, Italy, to the east of Rome. Telephus (Ancient Greek: “far-shining”) the founder of Pergamon was the son of Heracles and Auge, the daughter of King Aleus of Tegea. He later became the father of Eurypylus. Though initially intended to rule Tegea, Telephus instead ascended to the throne of Mysia in Asia Minor. During the Trojan War, he sustained wounds inflicted by the Achaeans as they journeyed to Troy to retrieve Helen and return her to Sparta.
