Aulus Metellus, also known as L’Arringatore in Italian and Aule Meteli in Etruscan, is the Latin designation for the Etruscan bronze sculpture commonly referred to as “The Orator.” Standing at a height of 67 inches, this sculpture is believed to originate from the early 1st century BCE.
It portrays an Etruscan-Roman figure clad in a Roman toga and sandals, depicted in the pose of an orator with his right arm raised. Discovered in Lake Trasimeno in 1566, the statue holds significant historical and artistic value as a notable example of Italian bronze sculpture from the later 1st millennium BCE. Inscribed with the name Aulus Metellus, the sculpture is attributed to be a representation of the Etruscan senator and magistrate of the Roman Republic, believed to have been a proficient public speaker.
While the artistic style of the statue reflects Etruscan influences and techniques, the attire and facial features of the figure suggest a Roman cultural identity. As one of the few intact original Etruscan-Roman bronze statues to have endured, “The Orator” serves as a testament to the evolving fusion of Etruscan and Roman artistic traditions during this period.
