The Augustus of Prima Porta is one of the most iconic images of Roman art—an extraordinary marble sculpture that seamlessly blends classical idealism, imperial propaganda, and divine symbolism. Standing over two meters tall, this statue portrays Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian Augustus as a victorious military commander and bringer of peace to the Roman world.
The statue was discovered in 1863 at the Villa of Livia Drusilla, Augustus’s wife, located in Prima Porta, just north of Rome. The villa belonged to the imperial family, and the statue was likely placed in a prominent area, such as a porticoed garden or atrium, where it would impress visitors and glorify the emperor.
The sculpture was created around 20 BCE, to commemorate the return of the Roman military standards previously lost to the Parthians. Although Augustus was already middle-aged by then, he is shown as a youthful, idealized figure in line with the Greek classical canon, strongly influenced by the sculptor Polykleitos and his Doryphoros.
Like all Roman and Greek statues, this sculpture was originally painted in vibrant colors. Traces of red, blue, and gold pigments have been found on the surface, revealing that what we now see as pristine white marble was once richly polychromatic, intended to bring the figure to life.
Augustus is shown in a commanding stance, with his right arm raised in a traditional adlocutio gesture, as if addressing his troops or the Roman people. He wears a richly ornamented cuirass (breastplate) and a military cloak (paludamentum) draped over his shoulders. Beneath the armor, he wears a short military tunic.
Originally, he held a scepter sword or spear in his raised hand, now lost, that symbolized his authority as a supreme military leader.
His bare feet are not a stylistic oversight but a deliberate choice. In Roman art, barefoot figures are either deities or heroes, suggesting that Augustus is not only a ruler but a semi-divine being elevated above ordinary mortals.
The breastplate is the centerpiece of the statue’s narrative—a symbolic tapestry carved in high relief that conveys Rome’s strength, diplomatic victories, and divine favor under Augustus.
At the heart of the cuirass:
A Parthian king is shown returning Roman military standards to a Roman figure, likely Tiberius, Augustus’s stepson, representing the peaceful resolution of a long-standing conflict in the East.Above this central scene is Caelus, the personification of the Sky, stretching his cloak across the heavens. Just below him rises Helios (the Sun) in his chariot, accompanied by Eos (Dawn). Together, they represent the dawn of a new era—the rise of a golden age under Augustus. At the bottom center, the goddess Tellus (Mother Earth) or Pax (Peace) reclines with a cornucopia, symbolizing the abundance and prosperity brought by the Pax Augusta. Additional figures on the cuirass personify conquered provinces and divine protectors of Rome, reinforcing Augustus’s universal rule. One seated female figure, possibly Hispania or Diana, accompanied by an animal, may represent the Cantabrian Wars (29–19 BCE), a major campaign under Augustus that completed the Roman conquest of Hispania. At Augustus’s feet sits Cupid riding a dolphin, which serves both a practical and symbolic purpose: Structurally, it stabilizes the marble sculpture. Symbolically, the dolphin refers to Augustus’s naval victory at Actium (31 BCE), while Cupid reinforces his divine ancestry as a descendant of Venus Genetrix, goddess of love and mother of Aeneas, the mythical ancestor of the Julian family.
The Augustus of Prima Porta is more than a likeness, it is a visual manifesto of imperial authority, divine right, and restored Roman order. Through idealized form, vibrant original colors, and carefully chosen symbolism, the statue proclaims Augustus as the restorer of balance, the bringer of peace, and the chosen ruler of a renewed Roman Empire.
