Attalus II Philadelphus (220-138 BCE) ruled as the king of Pergamum from 159 to 138 BCE, following the reign of his brother Eumenes II (197-159 BCE). He was the second son of King Attalus I Soter (241-197 BCE) and Apollonis of Cyzicus. His epithet, “Philadelphus,” translates to “Brother-loving. “Attalus II distinguished himself as a loyal general and diplomat under his brother’s rule, participating in military campaigns against Antiochus III, the Galatians, Prusias I, and Pharnaces I. He also played a pivotal role in the reorganization of the kingdom’s territorial holdings. In 167 BCE, the Romans attempted to place Attalus on the throne, but Eumenes II traveled to Rome to advocate his case and was instructed to depart Italy. Among Attalus II’s notable achievements are: founding the cities of Attalia (Antalya) in Pamphylia and Philadelphia in Lydia, continuing Eumenes’ architectural projects in Pergamum, and upholding the tradition of offering gifts to Greek cities and sanctuaries, including the construction of the “Stoa of Attalus” in Athens around 150 BCE. Attalus II passed away in Pergamon in 138 BCE at the age of 81-82. He was succeeded by his son Attalus III, who became the final Attalid king of Pergamon.
