Attalus I Soter (“Preserver”) (269 -197 BCE) was the ruler of the Pergamene Kingdom and the Ionian Greek polis of Pergamum from 241 BC to 197 BCE. He was the first of the Attalid dynasty to take the title of king, around 240-235 BCE. Attalus I was the adopted son and cousin of King Eumenes I (263-241BCE), whom he succeeded. He utilized military and diplomatic expertise to establish a formidable kingdom through policies of self-defense and victorious battles against the Galatians (the Gauls).
