This statue, stylistically reminiscent of both archaic and Ionic Greek art, suggests an original dating back to around 460 BCE. However, due to the absence of other replicas, some scholars propose it as an autonomous neo-Attic creation, possibly originating from the circle of Pasiteles in the mid-1st century BCE. It’s worth noting that during the Hadrianic era, blending multiple artistic styles was commonplace.
The amalgamation of archaic features with the Hellenistic grace in movement suggests that the figure represents Atalanta, the virgin huntress loved by the hero Meleager. Atalanta participated in a race against Hippomenes, during which he dropped golden apples to distract her, leading to her defeat.
