Asclepius is a hero and the God of medicine in ancient Greek religion and represents the healing aspect of the art of medicine. His temples were known throughout the ancient world as “Asklepions”, where people with sickness or ailments frequented to be healed of their maladies. According to the 1st century geographer Strabo, the most ancient and prominent Asklepion was located in Trikala.
One of the most famous temples of Asclepius is located in Epidaurus, where the ruins can still be seen today. Another famous Asklepion was located on the island of Kos, where the “father of medicine” Hippocrates may have started his illustrious career.
The Asklepion in Pergamon (whose ruins can still be seen today) was also a famous temple in antiquity, and still has a holy spring running from its fountain to this day, and is alleged to have amazing healing properties. This beautiful statue depicts the god standing majestically with a staff under his arm entwined with a serpent, which represents the many healing snakes that lived in his temples, and in fact the modern medical symbol with this same snake entwined around a pole has its origins in this symbol of the god of medicine Asclepius.
