TheRoman copy of 5th-century-BC Greek sculpture Venice, Archeological Museum
Asclepius was a heroic figure and deity within ancient Greek religious beliefs and mythology, embodying the aspect of healing in medical practices. His offspring include Hygieia (the goddess symbolizing health, cleanliness, and sanitation), Laso (goddess of recovery from illness), Aceso (goddess overseeing the healing process), Aglæa/Ægle (goddess representing the radiance of good health), and Panacea (goddess of universal remedies).
He shared a connection with the Roman/Etruscan deity Vediovis and the Egyptian figure Imhotep, being recognized as one of Apollo’s sons and often referred to as Paean, signifying “the Healer.” The emblematic rod of Asclepius, entwined with a serpent, endures as a symbol of medicine to this day. Those who served Asclepius, including physicians and attendants, were referred to as the Therapeutae of Asclepius.
