Artemis, the venerable goddess of animals and nature, cosmic divinity, and fertility, is an ancient deity embodying these sacred functions. In Ephesus, a city renowned for its significant cults, there existed one of the most revered, with origins so ancient that they are often attributed to the legendary Amazons. This statuette represents a Roman replica of the original cult statue housed in the Ephesian temple. Adorned with intricate details, it illustrates the multifaceted aspects of the goddess. Adorning her neck are a wreath of flowers and a necklace of acorns, encircling a relief depicting winged Victories. Below, a multitude of breasts symbolizes Artemis’s association with fertility, while animals such as deer, griffins, dogs, lions, cattle, and horses embellishing her dress and arms signify her dominion over the animal kingdom. This iconography of Artemis has been preserved through Hellenistic coins dating back to the II-I century BCE and from the Augustan period onwards.
