According to the tale, King Agamemnon had to offer his daughter Iphigeneia as a sacrifice to the goddess Artemis to ensure a favorable outcome in the war against Troy. This narrative is well-known in Greek mythology and is depicted in the tragedy “Iphigeneia in Aulis” by Euripides, dating back to the 400s BCE.
The statue group portrays the goddess Artemis, who intervenes at the last moment to rescue the young girl Iphigeneia, pulling her away from the altar where she is to be sacrificed. Artemis seizes the antlers of a deer and substitutes the animal in her place. Originally, the goddess statue was entirely covered in gold leaf, while Iphigeneia’s garment was painted in vibrant colors. The original statue hails from Anatolia.
