The Ludovisi Ares is a Roman marble sculpture from the Antonine period, depicting Mars, the god of war. It is considered a notable replica from the 2nd century, based on a Greek original from the late 4th century BCE, possibly associated with Scopas or Lysippus.
Thus, the Roman god of war is referred to by his Greek name, Ares. Ares/Mars is depicted as youthful and without a beard, seated on a trophy of weapons, while a cupid plays nearby, highlighting the contrast of the god of war being presented as an object of love in a moment of relaxation.
Johann Joachim Winckelmann, an 18th-century connoisseur known for his appreciation of male beauty, described the Ludovisi Ares as the most exquisite representation of Mars preserved from antiquity in his catalog of the Ludovisi collection.
Rediscovered in 1622, the sculpture was likely originally part of the temple of Mars, established in 132 BCE in the southern area of the Campus Martius, although few remnants of the temple remain today.
