The Parian marble statue of Aphrodite, discovered in Baiai, southern Italy, previously belonged to Lord Hope’s collection and was gifted to the National Museum by M. Embeirikos in 1924. Notably, the neck, head, and right arm were restored by the renowned Italian sculptor A. Canova (1757-1822).
Aphrodite is portrayed standing, predominantly nude except for a lavishly draped himation, which she holds with her left hand in front of her pudenda. This rendition, crafted in the 2nd century AD, is based on the Syracuse Aphrodite archetype, whose original dates to the 4th century BC.
