Achilles, a Greek hero central to Homer’s Iliad, was renowned as the strongest warrior in the Greek army during the Trojan War. He was born to Peleus, king of the Myrmidons, and Thetis, a sea nymph-goddess. Leading the Myrmidons, Achilles was celebrated as the greatest Greek warrior in the conflict. Homer’s Iliad recounts Achilles’ exploits, emphasizing his physical invulnerability, save for his heel, the result of his mother’s attempt to grant him immortality by dipping him in the river Styx.
This vulnerability led to his eventual downfall, giving rise to the phrase “Achilles’ heel,” symbolizing a critical weakness despite overall strength and prowess.
