PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Apollonius of Tyana was a 1st century CE philosopher, ascetic, and miracle worker whose influence spread across the Hellenistic world and the Roman Empire. Considered a religious reformer and a master of wisdom, his life and teachings were compiled in The Life of Apollonius of Tyana, written by Philostratus in the 3rd century CE. This work was based on various sources, including the accounts of his disciple Damis and testimonies from the cities he visited. Born in Cappadocia, Anatolia (today Turkey) Apollonius was a follower of Pythagoreanism, adopting an ascetic lifestyle that included abstaining from animal sacrifices, wine, and relations with women, as well as adhering to a strictly vegetarian diet. He believed in the immortality of the soul and held that the intellect (Nous) was the key to understanding the divine. His connection to the god Asclepius, deity of healing and sublunar Demiurge, reinforced his belief in healing as a bridge between humans and the divine. Apollonius traveled through various regions of the ancient world, including Egypt, Babylon, and India, acquiring philosophical and esoteric knowledge. He was credited with numerous supernatural abilities, such as clairvoyance, precognition, and the power to perform miracles, including raising the dead and healing the sick. Due to his teachings, itinerant preaching, and attributed miracles, Apollonius has often been compared to Jesus of Nazareth. It is said that he resurrected the daughter of a Roman senator, a story like the resurrection of Jairus’s daughter in the Gospels. Pagan sources also claim that he ascended to the heavens and was persecuted by Roman authorities, although he mysteriously escaped from his cell. For centuries, Apollonius was venerated throughout the Roman Empire. At least 16 temples were built in his honor in regions such as Greece, Asia Minor, and Mesopotamia. Emperor Aurelian regarded him as a divine figure and planned to build him a temple, while Emperor Julian promoted him as a model of pagan spirituality in opposition to Christianity. Unfortunately, with the consolidation of Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire, his figure was marginalized, and his cult gradually disappeared. In the 3rd century CE, during the civil war against the Palmyrene Empire, Aurelian reportedly had a vision in which Apollonius pleaded for mercy for the city of Tyana. This vision convinced the emperor not to destroy the city, contributing to the peaceful surrender of other towns. His influence on Neoplatonic thought was also significant, leaving an impact on philosophers such as Iamblichus and Porphyry. The statue, dating back to the 2nd century CE and displayed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, represents Apollonius of Tyana. Its style and sculptural details reflect the Greco-Roman tradition of depicting philosophical figures with a serene posture and introspective expression, emphasizing their wisdom and spiritual status. Our sculptor from Hephaisteion has meticulously reconstructed the base, foot, and fingers of the hand, restoring part of the statue’s original splendor. The original sculpture includes a support bar between the chest and one of the arms, a common element in ancient sculpture used to reinforce structure. For those who prefer a more stylized version or one closer to the original appearance, the reproduction is available with or without the support bar. This sculpture stands as a testament to the impact of Apollonius of Tyana in antiquity and his legacy as an enigmatic figure whose story challenges the boundaries between religion, philosophy, the esoteric, and the divine.
