Artemis (Diana)
Many centuries ago, King Agamemnon, ruler of Mycenae and commander of the Greek forces in the Trojan War, was forced to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia, so the gods would allow him to continue his journey to Troy. The sacrifice required offering Iphigenia to the goddess Artemis in exchange for favorable winds toward Troy. This account is well known from ancient Greek history and the tragedy Iphigenia in Aulis by Euripides, dating back to the 4th century BCE.
The original statue dating back to the 1st century BCE is from Anatolia but was discovered in a park known as the Gardens of Sallust in ancient Rome. In this park, emperors gathered works of art from various parts of the empire, some acquired legally, and others taken through imperial appropriation and now is housed in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, Europe. Originally, it was entirely covered in gold leaf, while Iphigenia’s dress was painted in vibrant colors depicting the goddess Artemis rescuing the young Iphigenia, pulling her away from the altar where she was about to be sacrificed. Meanwhile, Artemis grabbed the antlers of a deer and placed the animal in Iphigenia’s place. However, the sculptor from Hephaisteion decided to modify the composition, removing Iphigenia and adding a bow and arrows instead, allowing you to have an excellent reproduction of the goddess Artemis.
Artemis, the twin sister of Apollo and known as Diana in the Roman world, is one of the most important deities of the ancient Greek pantheon. She was traditionally associated with hunting, nature, and the protection of wild animals. She was also considered a goddess of virginity and female independence.
In Hellenistic art, Artemis was often portrayed as a young woman wearing a short tunic suitable for hunting. She was frequently depicted carrying a bow and arrows and sometimes accompanied by deer or hunting dogs, emphasizing her connection to nature and wildlife. Additionally, she was sometimes shown wearing a crescent moon on the front of her head, symbolizing her celestial and nocturnal associations
