Ptolemy I Soter, also known as Ptolemy Lagides, lived approximately from 367 BCE to 283 BCE. He was a Macedonian general who served under Alexander the Great and later became the ruler of Egypt from 323 to 283 BCE. Ptolemy was the founder of the Ptolemaic Kingdom and dynasty. In 305/4 BCE, he assumed the title of pharaoh. This sculpted portrait of Ptolemy can be recognized by comparing it to the depictions on contemporary coins. Certain features, such as the nose, the royal headband, and the bust’s restorations, were added by the French sculptor Augustin Pajou in the 18th century. The marble sculpture is believed to originate from either Greece or Asia Minor and was created around the 3rd century BCE.
