Socrates (469-399 BCE) stands as an Athenian philosopher, revered as the pioneer of Western philosophy. He is celebrated for his association with the Socratic method of inquiry, emphasizing questioning and dialogue, famously declaring that “an unexamined life is not worth living.”
Regarded as one of the greatest Western philosophers, Socrates is hailed as the originator of the dialectic method and a devoted adherent of the Oracle of Delphi, which hailed him as “the Wisest of the Greeks.” In moments of solemn contemplation, Socrates ponders the depths of wisdom in serene solitude.
Born to a sculptor and a midwife, he pursued studies in music, grammar, and gymnastics during his youth. Socrates showcased his valor in the army and notably distinguished himself at the Battle of Potidaea. Renowned for his nonconformity, he often presented himself barefoot and unkempt, defying the societal norms of fame and power that Athenians sought.
Socrates staunchly believed that the act of writing confined thoughts to mere letters, abstaining from penning any of his own ideas. Instead, his devoted disciple Plato meticulously chronicled Socrates’ discourses, actions, and ultimate demise. Socrates’ profound influence extended to Plato, who is widely credited with shaping the foundations of Western philosophical tradition.
