The Hermes Belvedere statue was originally found in the gardens surrounding Emperor Hadrian’s Mausoleum and was for many years believed to be a statue of Hadrian’s beloved Antinous, only to later be recognized as Hermes, Messenger of the Gods.
The statue is definitely from the time of Hadrian, and depicts Hermes in his role Psychopompos, the guide of souls to the underworld. This marvelous statue is a restored (caduceus added in the original place it was on the statue) replica of the iconic statue that now resides in the Courtyard of Statues in the Vatican in Vatican City, Italy.
