PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Attis is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap with two straps hanging down to the shoulders, a wide-collar tunic secured with a belt at the waist, trousers, and closed shoes. His right hand grasps the wrist of his left hand, which holds a cyathus (ritual ladle). The statue was previously misunderstood due to the presence of the priest’s assistant (camillus), and the structure is still commonly known as the “House of the Camillus.” However, the presence of the ladle and the slim thickness of the rear pilaster, insufficient to support a table, suggest instead that this statue served a cultic purpose. By missing a leg, one of the sculptors of the Hephaisteion has managed to reattach it, thus restoring its former glory with renewed fervor.
